Upper Cervical Chiropractor for Multiple Sclerosis

Speak to a Doctor

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease that impacts the central nervous system. The causes are still under research and there is currently no cure, but patients have found relief from MS symptoms by turning to upper cervical chiropractic treatment.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic of New York is a leading upper cervical chiropractor for MS. We design our focus on patient care and our hands-on, gentle and science-based approach to help alleviate symptoms.

What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable disease that impacts the ability of the brain to communicate with the body. It can also impact the transmission of information in the brain itself. This poor communication results from damage to the fatty tissue protecting and covering the nerve fibers in the central nervous system. The fatty tissue can also gradually disappear and, in some cases, be replaced by scar tissue.

Patients with multiple sclerosis experience a wide range of symptoms, so two patients may experience the same disease totally differently. The most common symptoms include:

  • Involuntary muscle spasms, especially in the legs.
  • Mobility problems.
  • Tingling or numbness, especially in the face, legs and arms.
  • Weakness and fatigue.
  • Vertigo and dizziness.
  • Problems with balance.
  • Incontinence.
  • Cognitive changes.
  • Pain and itching.

  • What Is an Upper Cervical Chiropractor?

Upper cervical chiropractors focus on gentle adjustment of the Atlas vertebra, also known as the C-1 vertebra, near the top of the spinal cord. The C-1 is unique because it has no disc below or above it, unlike the rest of the vertebrae. This structure allows the Atlas vertebra to move more freely as it supports the head, but it also allows it to move out of alignment more easily. Because of its importance, misalignment of this vertebra can lead to pain and issues all over the body.

How NUCCA Provides Relief for MS

A NUCCA chiropractor for MS can address any misalignment of the vertebrae, which can happen where a trauma from a car accident, sports injury or any whiplash-like injury has occurred. Research has suggested such a misalignment may increase the risk of MS lesions. MS lesions are areas of inflammation in the central nervous system where nerve cells have lost their protective coating.

A chiropractor treating MS symptoms begins with an imaging study of the upper spine to target any visible misalignment. The chiropractor can then adjust any specific site with their hands, using a gentle technique so as not to aggravate any pain that may be present.

This approach aims to reduce the compression or inflammation caused by any misalignment, thereby improving blood flow and communication between the spine and brain. While there is currently no cure for multiple sclerosis, many MS patients report a reduction in symptoms after this type of process.
