What Is Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN)?

TN affects the fifth cranial (trigeminal) nerve. Some research suggests TN may result from trauma to the trigeminal nerve resulting in nerve compression and loss of its protective coating. Other research indicates the cause may be biochemical changes or a compressed blood vessel. Regardless of the cause, most studies agree TN symptoms themselves stem from the damaged nerve remaining highly active.

TN symptoms include high levels of pain, which can feel like an electric shock. The pain affects the face, usually on the right side, and can last for a few seconds or a few minutes. Patients may experience a series of such pains within a short period of time.

Over time, TN symptoms tend to get worse, and doctors traditionally prescribe medication for the pain. However, as the pain increases, patients need more and more medication to cope. Eventually, doctors may recommend surgery as a last resort.

Pain From Trigeminal Neuralgia

The trigeminal nerve divides into the ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular, each providing sensation to different areas of the face. Depending on which branch of the nerve experiences irritation, you may feel pain from trigeminal neuralgia anywhere in your face. People with trigeminal neuralgia commonly experience intense pain in the lower half of their face.

Typically, trigeminal neuralgia will begin with a tingling or numb sensation in the face, followed by short bursts of pain lasting seconds to minutes until the pain becomes continuous. You may continue to experience flare-ups for weeks or months after the initial incident, followed by a painless period that may last for years. While this pain may seem to disappear, it can come back with greater intensity, making it essential to develop a treatment plan with your chiropractor.

  • HOW CAN UPPER CERVICAL CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA HELP?

An upper cervical chiropractor with services for trigeminal neuralgia can take imaging scans of the upper spine and neck area to determine if a vertebra is in misalignment. If it is, they can gently realign it so it does not trigger pain. After this process, you may need additional imaging to determine whether the vertebrae are in alignment.

There is research finding that compressed nerves, caused by an abnormal blood vessel, may cause TN pain. An upper cervical chiropractic clinic offering options for trigeminal neuralgia will correct misalignments of the spine, helping restore proper communication between the spinal cord, nerves and brain by removing compression from the brain stem and the nerves surrounding it. Many patients find this eases pain.

Why Choose An Upper Cervical Chiropractor?

Most people treat their trigeminal neuralgia by applying heat or cold packs. However, while these methods may work, applying constant pressure and extreme temperatures can cause irreversible damage. Seek the help of Dr. Gertner as soon as possible. Since trigeminal neuralgia connects to make nerve disorders, chiropractic care is an increasingly popular treatment method to reduce symptoms. Additional benefits of choosing our practice for your treatment include:
